Those around the coastal areas of New Orleans need no explanation of the word lagniappe. It’s a common part of their everyday language as well as for those of us who have come to appreciate the word and its cultural origin. Lagniappe (LAN yap), a unique word possibly derived from the ancient Incans (yapa), a dash of Spanish (la ñapa), and a sprinkle of Cajun-French, originated from the melding of many distinctive cultures in the area. Those cultures have made the word lagniappe their own.

So, what does this colloquial word mean? It simply implies “a little extra.” When we go beyond responsibility, it’s lagniappe. We give a little more of ourselves. Instead of one apple, we give two. It’s what we do, who we are, and a way of life. It is often associated with showing hospitality in the form of a small inexpensive gift or giving beyond expectations. Whether a little extra food from our garden or prepared from our kitchen, it’s lagniappe.

Perhaps this is what Jesus had in mind when he said, “And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two” (Matt. 5:41NKJV). It’s what we refer to as going the extra mile.

While expressions of spiritual truths will surface, the purpose of Food for the Spirit is to stimulate awareness of positive and negative occurrences throughout the world and to focus on what small part we each contribute toward making the world a better, not bitter, place. We are all too aware of society’s concentration on self-importance. Loving ourselves is essential but not to the point of indifference toward others. When we care about the concerns of another person, it benefits us, too. This idea of a little extra is what this website and blog are about. It’s intended to encourage all of us to recognize needs and give a little extra good instead of the bare minimum.

God is the master of lagniappe. He loves us much more than we deserve. God is love.

Join discussions and convey what you can or will contribute toward seeking the goal of sharing a little extra, starting with who you are and what you desire to be. Make lagniappe a part of your lifestyle. Let’s find joy in inspiring, giving, and loving.
